Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) booked their place in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 final after edging past San Francisco Unicorns (SFU) by seven runs in a thrilling Qualifier. A breathtaking late assault from Rovman Powell lifted LAKR to a competitive total before Andre Russell delivered a match-winning all-round performance to deny the Unicorns in a tense run chase. Despite a sensational unbeaten knock from Matthew Short, the Unicorns fell just short as LAKR held their nerve to seal a memorable victory.
Rovman Powell’s record-breaking blitz lifts LAKR
After being asked to bat first, Los Angeles Knight Riders posted 187/3 in their 20 overs. Colin Munro anchored the innings with a well-made 51 off 44 deliveries, sharing a crucial 96-run partnership with Russell, who contributed an unbeaten 62 from 50 balls in his milestone 600th T20 appearance.
The innings, however, completely changed in the final few overs when Powell arrived at the crease. The West Indies power-hitter unleashed a brutal assault, smashing six sixes, including four off four consecutive legal deliveries against Haris Rauf. Powell raced to a sensational unbeaten 50 off just 15 balls, registering the fastest half-century in MLC history and giving LAKR the late momentum they desperately needed.
Matthew Short’s lone battle falls short
Chasing 188, San Francisco Unicorns endured the worst possible start after Sunil Narine struck twice in the opening over. Lhuan-dre Pretorius was dismissed off the very first ball of the innings before Finn Allen also departed without scoring, leaving the Unicorns reeling at 0/2.
Short and Sanjay Krishnamurthi then staged a remarkable recovery with a 152-run partnership for the third wicket. Krishnamurthi played an excellent supporting role with 65, while Short remained unbeaten on a magnificent 94 and kept the chase alive deep into the contest.
However, the game turned once Krishnamurthi was dismissed in the closing stages. Russell then produced a brilliant penultimate over, conceding only six runs and preventing both Short and Aaron Hardie from finding the boundary. With 18 required from the final over, the Unicorns could not bridge the gap despite Hassan Khan striking a six, eventually finishing seven runs short.

Russell’s unbeaten fifty and disciplined bowling, combined with Powell’s record-breaking finishing display, proved decisive in a high-pressure knockout clash.
San Francisco Unicorns, meanwhile, are not out of the tournament yet. They will have another opportunity to reach the final when they feature in the Challenger against the winner of the Eliminator, keeping their title hopes alive despite the narrow defeat.
