Jordan Henderson has emerged as a surprise target for Chelsea and an exit from Brentford looks set to happen this summer.
The England international midfielder only joined the Bees last season, but he could now be on his way out on a free deal.
But how is that the case, considering Henderson still has one year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium?
Well, it all comes down to an informal understanding agreed to by the club regarding a move away if an opportunity came up.
And now Chelsea are interested, they could end up signing the former Liverpool captain without having to pay a fee…
Why is Henderson able to leave for free?
talkSPORT understands that Henderson can leave Brentford for free due to an agreement made with owner Matt Benham.
The gentleman’s agreement allows him to depart before the end of his contract at the club, which will be up in 2027.
No official clause is in his deal, but the stance remains, with all parties from day one verbally agreeing to the free exit.
Benham and Brentford are expected to honour their promise to Henderson if the chance to leave arises.
Chelsea’s approach could now provide that opportunity.
It’s understood that Henderson is keen on the transfer to Stamford Bridge ahead of the new Premier League season.
Permission has been given for him to make the move.

Chelsea’s shock transfers
Henderson becoming a target for Chelsea came out of nowhere on Monday, considering he is now 36 years old.
And with the Blues also pushing for Danny Welbeck, many fans across the country were left in shock at their new strategy.
Xabi Alonso appears to be looking for leadership and veteran players rather than bringing in their usual young signings.
Welbeck, aged 35, is expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton later this week.
Then Henderson could well be the next through the door, with Alonso surprising many with his latest business.
Speaking on the signing of Henderson, talkSPORT host and Chelsea fan Rory Jennings said: “I think what we need to do is bring in some standards for sure.

“I don’t think Jordan Henderson is the right answer. I quite like Henderson. I don’t necessarily rate him, but I quite like him.
“I think what he did for Liverpool was an integral part of their success. He was an integral part of everything that Jurgen Klopp built.”
He added: “I’m not convinced that Jordan Henderson is the answer. I’m not convinced that he’s ready to play at this level.
“The fact that we’re linked with him is minorly troubling.”
