The Rangers addressed two areas of need with one trade on Wednesday night.
TRADE DETAILS
Rangers receive: C Logan O’Hoppe, RHP Chase Silseth
Angels receive: INF Angel Arredondo
“Both, obviously, are really good players,” Rangers manager Skip Schumaker said after the club’s 3-0 loss to the Rays on Wednesday. “Chase is a right-handed power arm, leverage arm. I think our pitching group is hoping to identify some things to maybe move the needle even more.
“O’Hoppe. I think this guy’s going to be really good. I think hopefully a change of scenery, with some of our guys, can get him to a place where we all think he can get to. It’s exciting. He’s still young, a controllable catcher. With some injuries we’ve had on the catching front, I think it helps our depth. I think the front office did a fantastic job of acquiring two really good players.”
Elias Díaz has performed admirably since the Rangers signed him on June 6 in place of the injured Jansen. He’s contributed more offensively than Texas could have hoped, slashing .255/.268/.383 in 36 games, but the lack of depth with Higashioka landing on the injured list on July 21 proved too much to overcome.
O’Hoppe, a former top prospect who was acquired by the Angels from the Phillies for Brandon Marsh in 2022, has struggled in 2026 with a .209/.271/.295 batting line and four home runs in 75 games. He hit 20 homers in 2024 and 19 in 2025. O’Hoppe has a career .671 OPS in five MLB seasons. Since 2024, O’Hoppe’s 288 starts behind the plate are third-most in the American League, trailing only Seattle’s Cal Raleigh (303) and the Athletics’ Shea Langeliers (299). His 51 successful ABS challenges are the fourth-most among American League catchers.
The Rangers optioned him to Triple-A Round Rock after the trade.
“I think he’s excited to go down and work on some stuff,” Schumaker said of O’Hoppe’s option. “We have a real plan to get him back to, again, where we think he can be. The kid hits the ball as hard as anybody. He’s physical. He’s really good at game planning. He’s got a great arm. There’s a lot of things that we like about him. We’re hoping just to get him back to what we think he can be, which is a really good Major League catcher on a winning team.”
Silseth was a reliable reliever for the Angels prior to the trade, posting a 2.72 ERA in 47 appearances with 48 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings. A starter at the time of his 2022 debut, he transitioned full time to the bullpen in 2025 and should help a Texas ’pen with righty Chris Martin and lefty Jalen Beeks on the injured list.
“He will again be a really good option to have down there that I think will help everyone else out, just because of the depth of the bullpen,” Schumaker said.
