The 23-year-old forward has yet to make a big impact at the NHL level, but the Flyers are willing to hand him an affordable contract to find out if he has untapped potential. Grebenkin totaled four goals, 10 assists and a -7 plus-minus in 55 games played last season. He suffered an upper-body injury in March and was unable to suit up for Philadelphia in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He will get a couple more opportunities to correct that.
Briere is expressing a tremendous amount of faith in the existing crop of talent, as he trusts head coach Rick Tocchet to further mold the young guys on this squad. Perhaps Grebenkin is on the cusp of a breakthrough.
The 2022 fifth-round draft pick logged only seven games for the Toronto Maple Leafs before landing in Philly via a trade in March of 2025. He aims to bring more physicality and enter another gear on offense. If the 6-foot-2, 210-pound Russian is successful, then the Flyers may be inclined to reaffirm their commitment to him.
After securing this deal, Nikita Grebenkin can now look ahead to training camp. He has a statement to make over the next two years, and that should excite fans.
