The Red Sox acquired Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles Monday at the trade deadline. The Red Sox sent the Orioles a package of three top prospects and catcher Carlos Narvaez to bring Rutschman to Boston. The move is considered instrumental to Boston’s postseason chances.
Rutschman is currently on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester and he performed well and felt no ill effects after catching five innings. Rutschman threw out a runner attempting to steal, got one hit and also ran the bases. After the game, he answered questions about how he felt. He reported that he felt fine and did not suffer any difficulties or any problems as a result of the action.
“It’s great to be out there playing ball again,” Rutschman said. “I didn’t have any problems and the wrist responded well. There’s nothing like playing in a game because you just can’t mimic game action.”
The Red Sox will see how Rutschman is feeling when he wakes up in the morning. As long as the wrist does not stiffen up on him overnight, Rutschman is scheduled to serve as Worcester’s designated hitter in Sunday’s game.
The Red Sox conclude their homestand at Fenway Park against the Athletics Sunday. They go to Toronto for a 4-game series against the Blue Jays Monday.
It seems quite likely that Rutschman will join the Red Sox in Toronto at some point during the series.
