The Washington Commanders have a new blindside protector to search for. Tackle Laremy Tunsil must undergo surgery for torn triceps. His Saturday setback rises as one of the league’s first costliest injuries during NFL Training Camp.
Head coach Dan Quinn now must roll without one of top pass blockers. And Tunsil’s ailment comes amid quarterback Jayden Daniels returning from his injury-ravaged 2025 campaign.
Fortunately Washington has veteran Andrew Wylie to turn to. The 31-year-old brings two Super Bowl rings in tow from the Kansas City Chiefs.
But the Commanders still needs depth amid Tunsil likely heading to injured reserve. Here are some still available options.
George Fant
Fant feels like a no brainer for Washington and general manager Adam Peters.
The 34-year-old knows the organization well from last season, having played in Washington before entering free agency.
Except Fant remains unsigned and likely could hear a phone call soon. Fant owns 75 career starts and has played in 105 games.
Brandon Coleman
Staying with the theme of linemen with ties to the Commanders. But an internal option here with Coleman.
Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury slid Coleman to guard last season. However, he manned left tackle during the 2024 campaign and has ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter envisioning a possible move back.
Coleman arrived as the 67th pick out of TCU in the 2024 class, starting in 12 games. He also starred for the Horned Frogs team that played for the national title in the 2022 season.
Joseph Noteboom
Now time for an external option with no previous ties to Washington. But owns a past Super Bowl ring just like Wylie.
The 6-foot-5 Noteboom won Super Bowl 56 with the Los Angeles Rams while helping fill for Andrew Whitworth when needed. He even kept the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in check during the NFC Divisional Round road win 30-27. Noteboom originally was lined up as the successor for Whitworth including signing a three-year, $40 million extension.
Except Noteboom tore his ACL in 2022 amid the Rams’ pileup of injuries. He’s battled injuries and last was seen with the Baltimore Ravens in 2025. But he’s another who presents valuable experience if Washington turns to him.
