India are all set to begin their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with the opening encounter scheduled to start on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium. The series will be an important part of India’s ongoing World Test Championship campaign, with the visitors looking to make a strong start in Sri Lankan conditions.
Ahead of the Test series, India got an opportunity to acclimatise themselves to the local conditions by featuring in a practice game against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo. The visitors eventually came out on top in the contest, giving the team some valuable match practice before the serious action begins in Galle.
One of the biggest selection questions facing India is the identity of their No. 6 batter. With Ravindra Jadeja expected to slot into the XI as a second spinner, the competition is primarily between Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan for the remaining batting position. Sarfaraz’s return has made the debate even more interesting. The right-hander was recently added to India’s squad after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out of the series, giving the team another experienced batting option in the middle order.
Wasim Jaffer explains why Dhruv Jurel should be India’s No. 6
Former India batter Wasim Jaffer believes Jurel should get the nod over Sarfaraz for the opening Test, with continuity playing a major role in his argument. Jaffer pointed out that Jadeja is already expected to feature in the XI, leaving Jurel and Sarfaraz competing for the No. 6 position. According to him, Jurel’s continued presence around the Indian team gives him an advantage over Sarfaraz, who is returning to the Test setup after a period away.
“At number six, either Sarfaraz or Dhruv Jurel. Jadeja is also there, and he will certainly play as the second spinner. It will be a toss-up between Jurel and Sarfaraz. I feel Jurel will be preferred as he has been in the team for a while. And for someone who is coming back after a while, I think he will have to wait for his opportunity. To keep the continuity, I feel Jurel should play,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
Jaffer’s reasoning is therefore less about comparing the two batters purely on ability and more about maintaining continuity within the team. Jurel has remained part of India’s Test plans, while Sarfaraz’s recent recall has created a fresh selection dilemma.

Expectations high from Jurel to sizzle in the Island nation
While Jaffer has backed Jurel, the youngster knows that his place in the playing XI is far from guaranteed. His recent Test numbers have raised questions, particularly after his impressive beginning to international cricket in early 2024. Jurel made a strong impression during his debut Test series against England, showcasing composure with both the bat and gloves. However, he has struggled to maintain the same level of consistency since then, which has opened the door for Sarfaraz to challenge him.
Mohammad Kaif has also backed Sarfaraz for the Galle Test, arguing that his ability against spin could make him a suitable choice in Sri Lankan conditions. That leaves Jurel with little room for error if he gets the opportunity. With Sarfaraz waiting in the wings and India preparing for a spin-heavy challenge in Galle, the wicketkeeper-batter will need to make his chance count.
If Jurel is handed the No. 6 role, a substantial contribution with the bat could go a long way towards strengthening his position in India’s Test setup. The competition is intense, and the first Test could prove crucial in determining who gets the longer run in the middle order.
