Islam Makhachev will make the first defence of his UFC welterweight title against Ian Machado Garry in the main event of UFC 330 on Saturday, 15 August.
The championship fight takes place at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, with Machado Garry attempting to end one of the longest winning runs in UFC history.
Makhachev enters the contest with a 28-1 professional record and 16 consecutive UFC victories. Machado Garry stands at 17-1 after successive decision wins over Carlos Prates and former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.
The UFC has confirmed the main card will begin at 9pm ET on Saturday. That means UK viewers can expect the main card from 2am BST on Sunday, 16 August.
For Makhachev, victory would deliver more than a successful first defence at 170lbs. He currently shares the UFC record of 16 consecutive wins with Anderson Silva. A 17th would move him clear at the top.
Machado Garry has a different opportunity. The Irish contender can win his first UFC championship and hand Makhachev only the second defeat of his professional career.

Makhachev Starts His Welterweight Title Reign
Makhachev moved to welterweight after a dominant run at lightweight.
He won the vacant lightweight championship by submitting Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 in October 2022. He then successfully defended the belt four times before vacating it in May 2025 to pursue the welterweight championship.
That move immediately produced another title.
Makhachev faced Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 in November 2025 and controlled the championship fight across five rounds.
All three judges scored the contest 50-45 for Makhachev, who became the new welterweight champion.
World in Sport covered Makhachev’s victory over Della Maddalena and the way his pressure prevented the Australian from establishing his preferred striking rhythm.
That performance answered an important question about Makhachev’s move up in weight.
He could no longer rely on being the naturally larger fighter. However, his timing, positional control and ability to connect different phases of a fight remained effective against a genuine welterweight.
UFC statistics list Makhachev with an average of 3.10 takedowns per 15 minutes and 91 per cent takedown defence. He has also recorded 13 submission victories during his professional career.
Those numbers underline the challenge facing Machado Garry.

Machado Garry Earned His Championship Opportunity
Machado Garry’s route to Philadelphia has been less straightforward.
His unbeaten professional record ended against Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310 in December 2024. Rakhmonov won a five-round unanimous decision, but Machado Garry remained competitive against one of the division’s leading grapplers.
The Irishman responded in April 2025 by defeating Carlos Prates over five rounds.
He followed that result with another important victory against Belal Muhammad in Qatar in November.
Machado Garry won by unanimous decision, with the judges scoring the contest 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
That performance pushed him towards the front of the championship queue.
World in Sport’s UFC Qatar review highlighted Machado Garry’s takedown defence as a significant factor in his victory, before he called for a meeting with Makhachev.
The UFC has now given him that opportunity.
Machado Garry brings a considerable physical advantage into the contest. UFC figures list him at 6ft 3in with a 74.5-inch reach. Makhachev is listed at 5ft 10in with a 70.5-inch reach.
That difference could become central to the fight.

The UFC’s official fighter profiles list the records and measurements, while current UFC statistics place Machado Garry among the stronger defensive wrestlers at welterweight.
Where Machado Garry Can Trouble Makhachev
Machado Garry’s best route starts at range.
His height and reach allow him to attack without remaining directly in front of an opponent. He regularly uses his jab, front kicks and movement to disrupt rhythm and control distance.
The UFC previously highlighted those weapons when assessing his striking game, and his significant-strike accuracy currently sits above 54 per cent.
That matters against Makhachev.
Machado Garry cannot simply concede ground whenever the champion moves forward. Doing so would eventually leave him near the fence, where Makhachev can turn striking exchanges into clinches and takedown attempts.
Instead, the challenger needs to make Makhachev work for every entry.
Long straight punches and kicks could discourage the champion from closing distance too freely. Machado Garry must also move laterally rather than retreating in a straight line.
His 80 per cent UFC takedown defence provides some encouragement.
However, defending individual takedowns is different from dealing with Makhachev’s sustained grappling.
The champion can continue an attack after the first attempt fails. That means Ian Machado Garry may need to defend several positions before he can fully escape.
Why Makhachev Remains Such a Difficult Match-Up
Makhachev does not need to dominate every striking exchange to dictate this contest.
His biggest advantage lies in the number of problems he can create from the same forward movement.
A striking exchange can become a clinch. The clinch can become a takedown attempt. A defended takedown can turn into prolonged pressure against the fence.
That sequence repeatedly forces opponents to react rather than attack.
Makhachev also possesses enough striking ability to prevent Machado Garry from focusing entirely on wrestling defence.
His current UFC numbers show a significant strike accuracy close to 60 per cent, while he absorbs relatively little offence compared with many active fighters.
The champion therefore has several ways to win rounds.
If Machado Garry becomes too cautious about the takedown, Makhachev can compete on the feet. If the challenger commits heavily to his strikes, he risks giving Makhachev the opening needed to enter the clinch.
Finding the correct balance will be Machado Garry’s biggest tactical problem.
Can Machado Garry Stop the Takedowns?
This could decide the championship.
Machado Garry has already shown that he can defend takedowns against high-level welterweights. His performance against Muhammad provided further evidence that opponents cannot automatically control him simply by switching to wrestling.
Makhachev presents a different test.
UFC records list the champion with a 16-fight winning streak and 13 career submission victories. His ability to secure top position has remained one of the foundations of that success.
Machado Garry does not necessarily need perfect takedown defence.
He does need to limit how much time Makhachev has to control him.
A quick return to his feet after a takedown could still allow the challenger to win rounds through cleaner work at distance. Spending several minutes underneath Makhachev would make that far more difficult.
The opening two rounds should therefore reveal plenty.
If Machado Garry can consistently escape the clinch and reset in open space, the fight becomes much more competitive.
If Makhachev repeatedly backs him towards the fence and establishes control, the challenger could struggle to generate enough offence.
Makhachev vs Machado Garry Prediction
Machado Garry has legitimate weapons for this match-up.
His size, movement and accuracy give him opportunities that some of Makhachev’s previous opponents did not possess. His defensive wrestling has also improved enough to make the champion work.
However, Makhachev remains the more complete fighter.
He can change the nature of the contest without taking unnecessary risks. If Machado Garry begins finding success at distance, Makhachev can increase his wrestling pressure. If the Irishman becomes preoccupied with defending takedowns, openings should appear in the striking exchanges.
Machado Garry’s best chance may come from keeping the centre of the Octagon, forcing Makhachev to shoot from further away and making the champion pay for unsuccessful entries.
Doing that consistently across five rounds is the harder task.
Makhachev showed against Della Maddalena that his control-based approach can translate effectively to welterweight. Machado Garry should provide different problems, particularly because of his length and movement. Still, the champion’s ability to mix wrestling, clinch work and measured striking gives him more routes to victory.

A victory would give Makhachev his first successful welterweight title defence and a record 17th consecutive UFC win. Machado Garry, meanwhile, has the chance to alter the entire 170lb title picture with the biggest result of his career.
The result will also matter to the contenders waiting behind them.
