Blackhawks allowing teams to speak to Laurent Brossoit
The Chicago Blackhawks appear ready to move on from Laurent Brossoit.
The Blackhawks have been granting opposing teams permission to speak with the veteran netminder as he prepares to return to the NHL.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported during “Saturday Headlines” on Hockey Night in Canada, noting that while Brossoit is nearing a return to the ice, his future likely lies outside of Chicago.
Brossoit is scheduled to report to the American Hockey League next week for a conditioning stint. It will mark his first game action since the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The goaltender has been sidelined for 18 months following a significant injury sustained during that post-season run. Friedman reported the Blackhawks are allowing other clubs to communicate directly with Brossoit to gain clarity on his medical situation.
“You can understand what his situation is, what the exact surgery was, (and) what the process is,” Friedman said regarding discussions between Brossoit and interested suitors.
While Brossoit is a member of the Blackhawks, the organization reportedly does not have a roster spot available for him. Consequently, the conditioning stint will serve as a showcase for teams looking to bolster their goaltending depth.
Moving the 32-year-old is not without complications. Brossoit carries a salary cap hit of $3.3 million, a figure that may prove difficult for contending teams to absorb.
“Not everybody can take that,” Friedman said. “There might be some work that needs to be done here.”
