Cheating Olympian begs girlfriend to return after winning medal

In a sport that’s all about skiing and shooting, Norway’s Sturla Holm Lægreid decided to shoot his shot and try to win back his ex-girlfriend after admitting he cheated on her in a lead up to the games. Instead of celebrating his bronze medal or talking about the sport, Lægreid “committed social suicide” by appearing on TV and trying to apologize.

Translated from Norway’s VG.com came the profuse apology, that put the couple’s dirty laundry out into the world in the hopes of rekindling the relationship.

“There’s someone I wanted to share it with, who might not be watching today. Six months ago I met the love of my life. The most beautiful and kindest person in the world. Three months ago I made my biggest mistake and cheated on her, and I told her about it a week ago. It’s been the worst week of my life. I had a gold medal in life, and there are probably many who look at me with different eyes, but I only have eyes for her. Sports could have been a bit different in recent days. Yes, I wish I could share that with her.

I told her a week ago, and then it ended, of course. I’m not ready to give up. I hope that committing social suicide might show how much I love her. I’m taking the consequences for what I’ve done. I regret it with all my heart. Maybe I’m just stupid. I did stupid things, and then I realized that this is the woman in my life, and I can’t live my whole life keeping it a secret from her. My only way to the goal is to tell her everything and put everything on the table – and hope that she can still love me. I’ve done that for her, and now for the whole world. I have nothing to lose.“

I still can’t decide if this is a romantic gesture or not. I guess it’s nice to own up to being a fool in front of millions of people, especially a crowd in Winter Olympics-obsessed Norway, but it’s also supremely embarassing for Lægreid’s ex and those around her to be dragged into a nationally televised apology, and the pressure it now puts on her to either take him back, or leave him for good.

Time will tell if this bold proclamation of Lægreid’s indiscretion will work.
