Maple Leafs’ Dakota Mermis to be evaluated after knee-on-knee hit vs. Lightning

Dakota Mermis suffered a tough blow after drawing back into the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ lineup.

The 31-year-old defenceman will be evaluated after taking a knee-on-knee hit, head coach Craig Berube told reporters after their 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning Monday.

Pandemonium broke out at the start of the third period when Mermis attempted a breakout pass and was taken down by the knee of Lightning forward Gage Goncalves, who was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play.

With Mermis down in the corner, Maple Leafs teammate Bobby McMann was also assessed a match penalty for high sticking Oliver Bjorkstrand after a scrum broke out at centre ice.

Maple Leafs forward Dakota Joshua and Lightning defenceman Max Crozier were handed five-minute majors for fighting on the play.

Mermis went undrafted after helping the Oshawa Generals to a Memorial Cup win in 2015 and later signed with the Arizona Coyotes, where he made his debut in 2017. He has registered five goals and nine assists in over 88 career games with the Coyotes, Devils, Wild and Maple Leafs.
