Phillies, Don Mattingly closing in on agreement for bench-coach role

Don Mattingly has quickly found a new home.

The former Toronto Blue Jays bench coach is close to joining the Philadelphia Phillies in the same role, president Dave Dombrowski told reporters at MLB’s Winter Meetings on Monday.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Mattingly left his role because of a desire to spend more time with his family. The news came on Nov. 7, just under one week after Toronto lost Game 7 of the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mattingly’s son, Preston, is currently the general manager of the Phillies after taking over the role to begin the 2025 season, following four years inside their front office.

The 64-year-old made his first appearance in the Fall Classic after spending 39 seasons (10 as a coach, 17 as a player and 12 as a manager) in professional baseball.

Mattingly fell six votes shy from being elected into the Hall of Fame on Sunday after he was named one of eight former players on the Contemporary Era Player ballot.

The 1985 AL MVP with the New York Yankees slugged 222 career homers for 1099 RBIs and was named to seven all-star teams with nine Gold Glove awards.

Since making the move to coaching, he managed the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-2015) and the Miami Marlins (2016-2022) before transitioning to a bench coach with the Blue Jays. He was awarded the National League’s manager of the year award in 2022.

Philadelphia finished first in the NL East with a 96-66 record but flamed out in four games during the NLDS to the eventual champion Dodgers.
