Vancouver’s Leah John closing in on LPGA Tour card

Leah John is 12 good holes away from earning an LPGA Tour card for the first time in her career.

The 25-year-old Vancouver native is tied for fifth at 8 under through seven holes of the fourth and final round of the LPGA Q-Series final stage in Mobile, Ala. The round was suspended Monday because of darkness.

The top 25 and ties receive LPGA status for 2025. The 25th spot currently is 4 under.

John rocketed out to the lead with an 8-under 64 in the first round and has held steady since then in a tournament that has been shortened by 36 holes because of inclement weather.

“It’s been everything but predictable,” John said, per the LPGA, after her third round. “I just remind myself that everybody out here is dealing with the same challenges, so it’s one day at a time, one shot at a time, regardless of the conditions. But not going to lie, it’s been like the hardest tournament I’ve ever played mentally. You know, you’re just dealing with nerves that are lasting forever, and then you’re thinking you can go out and play and sort of start dealing with it, and then you’re held off again. So yeah, it’s a total grind.”

Organizers started what now will be the fourth and final round on Monday to try to finish things off by Tuesday.

John finished 22nd this year in her second season on the Epson Tour, falling short of the top-15 cutoff to get LPGA cards. Her highlight was a tournament title at the Four Winds Invitational on Aug. 1.

John played NCAA golf at Nevada.

Meanwhile, Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., is at 3 under through eight holes of the final round, one off the top-25 cutoff.

Megan Osland of Kelowna, B.C., is at 1 under through 14 holes of the final round.

Yan Jing of China leads at 11 under through 10 holes of her final round.
