Cubs acquire right-hander Aaron Civale from A’s

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs on Saturday acquired right-handed pitcher Aaron Civale and cash considerations from the Athletics in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Aiden Moffett. The 40-man roster currently stands at 40 players.

Civale, 31, is 5-7 with a 5.42 ERA (45 ER/74.2 IP) in 16 games (15 starts) this season with the Athletics. He began the campaign by posting a 3.23 ERA (11 ER/30.2 IP) in six starts in March and April. The righthander owns a 3.86 ERA (20 ER/46.2 IP) in 10 games (nine starts) on the road this season. He was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Wednesday.

The six-foot one-inch Civale signed a one-year contract with the Athletics in February after splitting the 2025 campaign between the Brewers, White Sox and Cubs. He began the 2025 season with the Brewers and White Sox and was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on August 31. The righthander went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (3 ER/13.0 IP) and one save in five relief appearances with the Cubs during the regular season and tossed 4.1 scoreless innings in one relief outing in the Postseason.

Civale is 48-51 with a 4.26 ERA (385 ER/813.0 IP) and 723 strikeouts, compared to 226 walks, in 156 career major league games (150 starts) with the Guardians (2019-23), Rays (2023-24), Brewers (2024-25), White Sox (2025), Cubs (2025) and Athletics (2026). He pitched his only career complete game on Aug. 19, 2020, against the Pirates, allowing just five hits and one run with six strikeouts in the outing.

A native of East Windsor, Conn., Civale was selected by Cleveland in the third round of the 2016 draft. He graduated from Loomis Chaffee High School in Windsor and pitched at Northeastern University (Mass.) for three seasons. He was traded from Cleveland to Tampa Bay for infielder Kyle Manzardo in July 2023 and from Tampa Bay to Milwaukee for minor-league infielder Gregory Barrios in July 2024.

Moffett, 22, is 1-2 with a 9.67 ERA (24 ER/22.1 IP) and one save in 17 games in relief for the Arizona Complex League Cubs and Single-A Myrtle Beach this season. He was signed by Chicago as an undrafted free agent on July 22, 2025.
