The Reds have Jeremie Frimpong as their only available senior option for the role, although Calvin Ramsey has featured in pre-season.
Conor Bradley remains sidelined with a significant knee injury that he suffered in January during a 0-0 draw with Arsenal.
His absence, alongside Frimpong’s fitness issues, led to former head coach Arne Slot playing midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back.
Joe Gomez is also capable of playing in the position, but could miss the start of the season after picking up an injury during pre-season.
Liverpool could soon turn towards Spence, with The Sun reporting their interest in the Tottenham Hotspur man.
The 25-year-old had an impressive World Cup campaign with England as they finished third.
Spence signed a long-term contract with Spurs last summer but, as talkSPORT reported in July, they are open to offers.
A move could cost Liverpool £35million, although other clubs appear to hold stronger interest in the defender.
This includes teams from the Premier League and Italy, including the Milan duo AC and Inter.
