Three years after Prairie View A&M’s interest, Texas Southern is eyeing Jackson State’s Ashley Robinson as their next athletic director.
Jackson State University Athletic Director Ashley Robinson is widely considered one of the best athletic administrators in college today. He’s presided over immense growth and championship success for the Tigers over his tenure and has attracted the eye of rival institutions. Prairie View A&M looked to secure him from Jackson State in 2023. Now, Texas Southern is eyeing Robinson for their open athletic director position.
According to Terrence Harris of the Houston Defender, Texas Southern president James W. Crawford has been in contact with Robinson about becoming the athletic director at the institution.
“Sources are confirming to the Defender that Texas Southern President Crawford has presented former Prairie View AD and current Jackson State AD Ashley Robinson for the vacant job and Seton Hall assistant Corey Lowery for the basketball job. There is some concern about Lowery,” Harris said on his X account.
The news of Texas Southern’s interest in Robinson comes three years after Prairie View A&M tried to lure him back to the institution after he served as athletic director for five years. Now Texas Southern is looking for his services after a decorated tenure in Jackson, Mississippi. Robinson took over as Jackson State’s Director of Athletics in 2018, and his tenure has been marked by several bold moves for the athletics program. Chief among them was landing Deion Sanders as head football coach in September 2020, a hire that reshaped the program.
Under Sanders, Jackson State won back-to-back SWAC championships and made three trips to the Cricket Celebration Bowl, capturing the title in 2024.
