The Houston Astros were looking for another bat at the MLB Trade Deadline. The Astros have shown interest in Kyle Stowers from the Miami Marlins, but the trade talks have not gotten very far.
Now, the team has added a bat, not just Stowers, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.
“Daulton Varsho is close to going to the Astros, per source. It’s in medical review. The return will be starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti,” Bannon posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Daulton Varsho was a second-round pick of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He would make his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2020. Varsho was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of the 2023 season. The 30-year-old Varsho has played in 99 games for the Jays this season and is having a stellar year. He is hitting .243 with a .307 on-base percentage and .682 OPS. He has seven home runs and 26 RBIs while scoring 39 runs this year. Varsho is set to be a free agent at the end of the season.
The Blue Jays are getting another pitcher under team control in return. The Jays added Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Arrighetti will be under team control through the 2029 season. He made his debut in 2024 with the Astros, starting 28 games and going 7-13 with a 4.53 ERA. The pitcher missed much of the 2025 season with a fractured right thumb after being hit in pre-game workouts in April. He would end up making seven starts, going 1-5. This year, he started the season in Triple-A but would quickly return to the majors.
Arrighetti is 7-5 on the year with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. The former Astros pitcher has been on the IL since July 25 due to right foot nerve irritation. If both Arrighetti and Varsho pass physicals, the trade will become official.
