The American League manager, John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays, has named a starting pitcher for the MLB All-Star Game. Dylan Cease will be making the start for the American League, becoming the first Blue Jays pitcher to start in the All-Star Game since Roy Halladay in 2009.
Now, Schneider is explaining why he chose Cease to make the start at the game, per SNY Yankees.
“I think if you look at the overall body of work this year, where he (Cease) is in his career, the entire body of work over the last three years, again we are talking about 2026, but I think the evolution of him as a pitcher. Again, I got to see it up close and personal, but you’re talking about leading the league in strikeouts, up there in innings pitched, quality starts, WAR. There was a lot of categories that he was either at the top or second in, and I think that’s what tipped it. It was performance. Part of it was me seeing him up close every day, but I think Dylan’s performance made him very deserving of this honor,” Schneider said of his pitcher.
While Cease is just 6-4 on the year, he has been solid. He is third in the American League in ERA, best in strikeouts, and second in WAR. The only player beating him in both ERA and WAR is New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler. Still, Schneider brought up the entire body of work over the years. Cease is 30-years old and in his eighth season in the majors. Meanwhile, Schlittler, whom Cease was chosen over, is in his second year in the majors, and is just 25-years old.
The MLB All-Star game takes place at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 8 pm ET.
