The Milwaukee Brewers lost out on starting pitcher Tarik Skubal this season, at the Major League Baseball trade deadline. Despite intense interest from Milwaukee, the Detroit Tigers instead traded Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Brewers management is now moving on after losing out on the ace.
“I don’t think we can be thinking about the Dodgers right now,” Brewers manager Pat Murphy said, per MLB.com. “This is Aug. 3, and I don’t think we can assume anything. We’ve got to go play baseball. This has affected us already. It’s already affected the team. I think that’s a reality, and I don’t think it’s healthy. But it’s a part of our game right now. We can’t try to pretend it’s not there. We can’t lie to the players. All that being said, we have to respond to it now.”
Milwaukee reportedly was aggressive in their trade offer to Detroit, Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold said. The Brewers were willing to move a lot of top prospects if it meant getting Skubal.
“We certainly talked about doing some ‘irresponsible’ stuff as well, but we tried to thread the needle, as Murph says,” Arnold said. “We were prepared to push a lot of chips in. And look, I think we did.”
Milwaukee leads the National League Central, with a 69-43 record.
Brewers viewed as losers at the trade deadline
Analysts aren’t being kind to the Brewers right now. Milwaukee was listed as one of the deadline’s losers this season, per The Athletic.
“When you enter a trade deadline rumored to be in on Tarik Skubal, the top name on the trade market, and come away with Dustin May and JoJo Romero, it’s bound to be disappointing. The Brewers were in on trade talks all over the map, but little materialized. Milwaukee is the same team it was on the other side of the deadline. That just so happens to be the team that entered Monday with the best record in baseball. So, maybe the Brewers are on to something,” The Athletic wrote.
Time will tell if the club is on to something. Milwaukee is in action against the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday.
