In just his second season, Chase Burns has developed into a pitcher the Reds can build around — and they ensured he’s going to be around for years to come.
Burns and the Reds are in agreement on a seven-year, $105 million extension, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Thursday, and it does not include any deferrals or options. The club has not confirmed the deal, which would run through 2033.
The big move for Burns comes on the heels of one of the biggest weeks in his young career. The 23-year-old righty made his first All-Star Game after pitching to a 2.54 ERA in 18 starts this season. He has amassed an 11-1 record.
Those numbers have him in contention for the NL Cy Young Award, though dominance from others like Jacob Misiorowski, Cristopher Sánchez and Shohei Ohtani have made it quite a race.
Still, it’s been an excellent breakout for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 Draft out of Wake Forest. He debuted in 2025, pitching in 13 games (eight starts), but has ridden his upper-90s fastball and devastating slider to this year’s improvement.
Burns is the latest in a long line of extensions for young players this season. Some of the names on that list include the Pirates’ Konnor Griffin, the Tigers’ Kevin McGonigle and the Brewers’ Cooper Pratt.
