ARLINGTON — The White Sox have opened post-All-Star break action with two series wins on the road, a significant step forward for a team with a 23-30 ledger away from home.
They followed a strong weekend effort in Toronto by completing that second series success Wednesday night with a 4-2 victory over the Rangers at Globe Life Field, serving as a perfect answer to a 10-0 loss to Texas on Tuesday. Chase Meidroth knocked out four singles and drove in two, while Andrew Benintendi had two singles to drive in the other two.
But this night ended up being quite a relief for the visiting South Siders. Relief, as in exceptional bullpen work across the board to support the two runs allowed in five innings by Anthony Kay.
Jordan Hicks hurled a scoreless sixth, despite errors from catcher Edgar Quero and third baseman Miguel Vargas extending the inning. The right-hander has a career-best 11-game scoreless streak since being reinstated from the 15-day injured list on June 21.
Grant Taylor took over and hurled two perfect innings, striking out the side in the seventh on 14 pitches and adding two more strikeouts in the eighth. Wednesday’s win pushed the White Sox back atop the American League Central by one game, as the Guardians lost to the Twins on a night José Ramírez returned from injury to their lineup.
