The White Sox placed right-hander Davis Martin on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his right middle finger and recalled righty José Urquidy from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
Chicago also recalled left-hander Tyler Schweitzer from Charlotte and optioned righty Tanner McDougal.
Martin is 9-6 with a 4.32 ERA this season. He was ejected in the third inning of Thursday’s game against the Reds after hitting rookie Sal Stewart with an up-and-in pitch. He had allowed four runs (three earned) over two-plus innings to that point and developed the blister that led to the IL stint.
After pitching to a 2.00 ERA in his first 11 starts this season, Martin has struggled with consistency since the beginning of June, compiling a 7.06 ERA in 13 starts through Thursday.
Urquidy, acquired from the Pirates before the Trade Deadline, has gone 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings with Charlotte. In 20 starts at Triple-A this season between Indianapolis and Charlotte, the veteran is 6-4 with a 3.48 ERA. He’s also made five relief appearances for the Pirates, pitching to an 8.53 ERA in 6 1/3 innings.
The 31-year-old has pitched parts of seven seasons in the big leagues with the Astros, Tigers and Pirates. He’s gone 21-17 with a 4.07 ERA in 86 appearances (70 starts).
