Dodgers’ Dave Roberts shares important Will Smith injury update

Los Angeles Dodgers star Will Smith is continuing to recover from a neck injury. With Smith’s timeline uncertain, some have wondered if the Dodgers will pursue catching help before the MLB trade deadline. Smith’s injury timeline received an update on Saturday, although an official return date still remains uncertain.

“Dave Roberts said Will Smith will need at least 3-4 weeks to ramp up, including a rehab assignment. Other injury news: Blake Treinen faced hitters again today. Next step is a rehab assignment,” Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported.

Smith is still at least a few weeks away from returning. The good news is, barring any setbacks, Smith should be able to return this season. LA’s goal is to win a third consecutive World Series, and Smith can still help the ball club achieve that feat.

The 31-year-old catcher has been limited to 52 games played this season due to injury. Smith has hit .249/.338/.382 across 201 plate appearances. The three-time All-Star is one of the better catchers in the game, and the Dodgers are obviously looking forward to his return.

For now, Dalton Rushing and Eliezer Alfonso are leading the way from the catcher position for the Dodgers. There is a chance Los Angeles will look to add another catcher as well before the trade deadline.

At the moment, the Dodgers are focused on their upcoming game against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night. First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 9:10 PM EST at Dodger Stadium in what should be a competitive contest.
