The Los Angeles Dodgers made multiple pitching roster changes before Saturday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, placing right-hander Will Klein on the injured list with right elbow discomfort and recalling Kyle Hurt and Wyatt Mills from Triple-A Oklahoma City. The team also designated left-hander Cole Irvin for assignment, just one day after adding him to the major league roster.
Klein had been a crucial part of Los Angeles’ bullpen earlier in the season but he hasn’t been at his best lately. The 26-year-old appeared in 36 games this year, including three starts, and compiled a 3-4 record with a 3.67 ERA. Across two seasons with the Dodgers, he has made 50 appearances with a 4-5 record and a 3.32 ERA.
His recent results led to a difficult stretch before the IL move. Klein allowed a run in six straight appearances, gave up an earned run in five consecutive outings, and surrendered at least one run in eight of his last 11 games. His ERA increased from 2.12 on June 16 to 3.67. His most recent outing came Friday against the Red Sox, when he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three runs, with only one charged as earned.
Hurt returns to the Dodgers after last appearing for the team on July 19 as the 27th player for a doubleheader against the New York Yankees. He pitched two scoreless innings in that appearance. Earlier in the season, Hurt posted a 1.50 ERA in April and a 0.75 ERA in May before scuffling in June and July. Overall, he has a 4.59 ERA in 33.1 innings with 39 strikeouts, an 112.6% walk rate, and a 1.38 WHIP.
Mills is also back with Los Angeles after spending time with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He has appeared in five games for the Dodgers this season, producing a 6.23 ERA, a 2.31 WHIP, and four strikeouts across 4.1 innings. With Oklahoma City, Mills owns a 2.41 ERA in 37.1 innings.
Irvin’s departure came after he pitched six innings during Friday’s bullpen game. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out five, helping preserve Los Angeles’ pitching staff despite the loss. Since he did not have minor league options remaining, the Dodgers designated him for assignment after his short return to the major leagues.
