CHICAGO — Edgar Quero singled home Tristan Peters with one out to complete an exciting 6-5 comeback victory for the White Sox over the Yankees in 12 innings. It was the eighth walk-off hit for Chicago (56-51) this season, taking place Wednesday before 31,694 frenzied fans at Rate Field, and Quero’s second.
The game was extended when catcher Ali Sánchez inexplicably tried to pick off Munetaka Murakami from third base with two outs in the 11th and threw the ball into left field, allowing Murakami to score. Great defensive plays by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and third baseman Ryan McMahon had put the Yankees one out away from victory.
Jordan Hicks pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the 12th, striking out Ben Rice on four pitches and retiring Sánchez on a routine grounder to second.
For six innings, the White Sox did nothing with Yankees starter Cam Schlittler, much as the rest of baseball has done against the right-hander during the 2026 season.
But Schlittler was gone by the time the White Sox rallied for three runs in the eighth to even the score at 4. Chase Meidroth opened the frame with a double down the left-field line off reliever Fernando Cruz, and he came home one out later on Sam Antonacci’s two-run homer down the right-field line against Paul Blackburn. Murakami connected on the next pitch from Blackburn to tie the game.
New York jumped on Davis Martin for four runs in the first, punctuated by Spencer Jones’ three-run home run. But Martin didn’t allow anything more over the next five innings, finishing with a career-high 106 pitches and striking out six.
Schlittler limited the White Sox to one hit in six innings and no walks before issuing a free pass to Murakami to start the seventh and then hitting Miguel Vargas with a pitch. Murakami came around to score on Andrew Benintendi’s double.
