The Florida Gators have motivation to return to the status as College Football Playoff contenders. With Jon Sumrall embracing the reins, there is potential on the way for the SEC squad.
Sumrall is gearing up for his first year as the Gators’ head coach, coming off a strong stint with the Tulane Green Wave. His last season at the program saw him lead Tulane to the CFP, falling in the first round.
ESPN analyst Bill Connelly provided his thoughts on teams that can recover from poor campaigns and deliver strong results in 2026. He named the Red Raiders as one of those squads, looking forward to their ceiling with the talent they possess.
“[Jon] Sumrall’s first roster doesn’t feature tons of guaranteed stars, but it has lots of components. And that’s something Sumrall can generally work with. He inherited a Troy team that had gone 10-13 over the previous two years and went 23-5, then he inherited a good Tulane team and won 20 games in two years with an American title and playoff berth,” Connelly wrote.
“I’ve been wrong about Florida’s capabilities plenty of times through the years, but I haven’t been particularly wrong about Sumrall. Granted, I was pretty high on Sumrall’s predecessor, Billy Napier, too, but after a genuine offensive collapse last season, the bar for improvement in Sumrall’s first season is low.”
“Florida collapsed to 89th in offensive SP+, and while new starting quarterback Aaron Philo — who followed new coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech — isn’t incredibly proven, he was exciting in a small sample. There seem to be pieces for a strong run game, and a decent defense returns a solid core. I’d be shocked if the Gators didn’t improve into at least the 40s in SP+, and probably a lot more than that.”
What lies ahead for Jon Sumrall, Florida
Jon Sumrall has a lot of expectations on his plate going into the 2026 campaign. The Gators will look forward to what he brings to the table.
Florida finished with a 4-8 record last season, going 2-6 in SEC Play. They fired Billy Napier midseason and allowed Billy Gonzales to conclude the campaign before hiring Sumrall.
The Gators’ 2026 campaign starts at home when they host the Florida Atlantic Owls. That game commences on Sept. 5 at 7:45 p.m. ET.
