The semi finals of the 2026 World Cup are now upon us, with the two pre-tournament favourites, France and Spain, going head to head in the first battle of the final four in Dallas on Tuesday night.

The two-pre tournament favourites and perhaps the two most impressive teams of the World Cup so far go head to head on Tuesday night in the first semi final of this summer’s tournament, a clash which could so easily have been the final in any other year.
France will head into Tuesday’s semi final as marginal favourites in Dallas, the only team to in the entire tournament to have won all six of their matches within 90 minutes, aided by their box office forward line, who have each lived up to the hype so far this summer.
Kylian Mbappe is joint-first in the race for the Golden Boot having scored eight goals and added three assists across his six matches in the tournament so far, while current Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele has added five goals, with the likes of Michael Olise, Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola each chipping in with goals and assists.
Didier Deschamps is now just two wins away from becoming just the second manager to ever won the World Cup on two occasions, and has already announced he will be stepping away from the job after this week’s culmination of the tournament.
Les Bleus finished comfortably atop their group in the group stage, beating each of Senegal, Iraq and Norway, before sweeping aside Sweden in the last 32 by a 3-0 scoreline, edging past a rough and ready Paraguay side 1-0 in the round of 16 before comfortably getting the better of African champions Morocco in their quarter final last week in a 2-0 win.
Spain started the World Cup as the pre-tournament favourites but took a bit longer than expected to get into full swing, but the reigning European champions appear to have found their groove this tournament after being on the wrong end one of the shocks of the tournament in their opening game.
Luis de la Fuente’s side were, against all odds, held to a goalless draw against World Cup debutants Cape Verde, but managed to steady the ship with wins over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay which saw them finish top of Group H.
The 2010 world champions then eased to a 3-0 win over Austria in their opening knockout match, before a 1-0 win over Portugal and a 2-1 victory against Belgium in their last two matches, both courtesy of late winners by Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino, have sent the Spaniards into the semi final of the World Cup for just the second time in history.
This will be the 39th meeting between the two nations, and Spain have the better of the head-to-head with 18 wins to 13, including having won each of the last two meetings, most recently in a 5-4 thriller in Stuttgart in the semi finals of the Nations League last summer.
Interestingly, the two nations have only met before once in a World Cup, in which France came from a goal down to win 3-1 in Hanover in the round of 16 in 2006, en route to reaching the final.
