Heliot Ramos got his Yankees career started on the right foot. It just so happened that foot was without a shoe.
The newly acquired outfielder, who came over in a Deadline day trade with the Giants, got his first hit in pinstripes in the second inning of his second game with his new team on Wednesday night. It was a flare into short right field, and Ramos smelled double off the bat.
He came flying around first base, which was when things started to go haywire. First his left shoe came off, causing him to briefly trip, and that awkward movement subsequently made him lose his helmet. Head exposed and barefooted, the hustling Ramos somehow still slid safely into second base.
“Lost all kinds of equipment, but he’s there with his first Yankee hit,” play-by-play announcer Ryan Ruocco said on the broadcast.
Ramos is expected to bring some thump from the right side to a Yankees lineup that is missing Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Cody Bellinger, and he’s proud to be wearing the pinstripes.
Clearly Ramos is already making a fast impact on his new team. So fast, in fact, that he ran right out of his shoe.
