Islam Makhachev vs. Ian Machado Garry is more than a UFC welterweight title fight.
When the two meet in the main event of UFC 330 on Saturday in Philadelphia, Makhachev will be fighting to further cement his place among the greatest fighters in UFC history, while Garry will have the opportunity to change the trajectory of Irish MMA forever.
There are also records, championship implications and several blockbuster matchups waiting on the other side of the result.
What does Islam Makhachev have to lose?
Makhachev enters UFC 330 with a 28-1 record and a 16-fight UFC winning streak, which is tied with Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history. A victory over Garry would give Makhachev sole possession of the record with 17 consecutive wins inside the Octagon.
More importantly, this is Makhachev’s first defense of the welterweight championship.
After ruling the lightweight division and making four successful defenses of that title, Makhachev moved up to 170 pounds and defeated Jack Della Maddalena to become a two-division UFC champion. Losing his first welterweight title defense would immediately raise questions about whether his dominance at lightweight would translate into the deeper welterweight division.
A loss would not erase Makhachev’s lightweight legacy, but it would give the welterweight division a new champion and force the former lightweight king to work his way back toward another title shot.
What’s there for Ian Machado Garry to gain?

Garry enters UFC 330 with a 17-1 professional record and a 10-1 UFC record. His only professional defeat came against Shavkat Rakhmonov, but he has since rebounded with victories over Carlos Prates and former welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.
A victory would make Garry the UFC welterweight champion and only the second Irish fighter to win UFC gold, joining Conor McGregor.
It would also instantly give Garry one of the biggest wins of his career. Beating a former lightweight champion who is currently ranked No. 1 on the UFC’s pound-for-pound list would completely change how Garry is viewed within the sport.
For a fighter who has repeatedly called himself “The Future,” there may not be a better opportunity to prove it.
If Makhachev wins
If Makhachev defeats Garry, the UFC has several options.
Carlos Prates could be the most obvious next challenger. Prates has already been mentioned as a potential opponent by Makhachev, and his recent run has made him one of the division’s most dangerous contenders.
A rematch with Jack Della Maddalena could also become relevant if the former champion works his way back into contention.
There is also the possibility of Makhachev continuing his run at 170 pounds and attempting to build another championship legacy after already establishing himself as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history.
If Garry wins
A Garry victory would completely reshape the UFC welterweight division.
The most intriguing immediate possibility could be a rematch with Shavkat Rakhmonov, who handed Garry the only loss of his professional career. A championship rematch would give Garry the opportunity to avenge his lone defeat while defending his UFC title against the man who previously beat him.
Carlos Prates would also make sense. Garry already owns a decision victory over Prates, and the Brazilian has since gone on a tremendous run, making a rematch much more compelling than their first meeting.
Depending on how the rankings develop, Jack Della Maddalena could also remain in the championship picture.

If Makhachev loses, the former champion would likely remain near the top of the welterweight division and could potentially fight his way back toward another title opportunity.
For Garry, a loss would be more complicated, but far from devastating. He would still be one of the UFC’s most recognizable young welterweights, and a rematch with Rakhmonov could immediately provide a path back toward title contention.
The stakes are enormous for both men, but only one will leave Philadelphia with the welterweight championship, a win over an elite contender and an entirely different future waiting for them.
