NEW YORK – The lineup card landed with the Yankees looking for someone to do more. Jazz Chisholm Jr. did just enough.
Chisholm cracked a tiebreaking home run off Evan Phillips in the eighth inning, powering the Yankees to a 2-1 victory that salvaged the finale of a split-admission doubleheader on Sunday evening at Yankee Stadium.
After the Yankees were largely silenced by Yoshinobu Yamamoto in a complete-game effort during Sunday’s first game, with Los Angeles dealing New York an 8-2 loss, manager Aaron Boone said that his team’s scuffling lineup “has got to do more.”
With the bats limited to Cody Bellinger’s first-inning RBI single through the first seven innings, Chisholm finally answered the call, taking a Phillips fastball to the opposite field for his 14th home run of the season.
Both teams employed bullpen games, and Bellinger’s knock off Will Klein comprised the only scoring in the contest until the eighth, when Fernando Cruz was summoned in relief. Cruz’s first windup was delayed briefly as the umpires instructed him to replace the black-and-red glove Cruz carried to the mound.
When Cruz delivered the pitch, Tommy Edman was ready, slugging a pinch-hit, game-tying home run over the right-center-field wall.
The Yankees flushed a prime scoring opportunity in the fifth inning, loading the bases with none out behind three singles. Brock Stewart pitched out of the jam, striking out Jasson Domínguez, inducing Chisholm to foul out then striking out Anthony Volpe. But Chisholm atoned for that three innings later.
