Jefry Yan pitches can really dance. He can, too.
The charismatic (to say the least) left-hander made his long-awaited MLB debut for the Mets on Wednesday in Cleveland, and he delivered as advertised.
Known in the Minor Leagues for his demonstrative celebrations after strikeouts, Yan struck out two in his one inning work in a 6-5, 10-inning win over the Guardians at Progressive Field, punctuating them with a leap off the mound straight up into the air.
He relieved starter Christian Scott in the sixth inning. He fanned the first batter he faced, Angel Martínez, looking. Up in the air, he went, finishing with a slide step to the back of the mound,
Then he gave up two singles and walk to load the bases. After a visit to the mound, he struck out Chase DeLauter and induced Jo Adell to ground out, exiting unscathed and credited with a hold.
“I had seen it in the past,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “Everybody’s got their own style.”
Vogt was ejected after arguing DeLauter being called out a checked swing.
Yan threw five pitches of at least 100 mph, topping out at 101.1. He became the first Mets pitcher to break the 100 mph threshold this season.
