KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill’s absence,” the BCCI said in a statement on X.

The warm-up match against SLC XI is India’s only scheduled preparation fixture before the two-Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 15, 2026. The three-day game in Colombo therefore carries significant importance as the squad’s final competitive outing before the first Test.

How did Gill sustain the injury during practice?

Gill’s finger was struck on two separate occasions during Thursday’s session. The first blow came while he was batting in the nets against Gurnoor Brar. Shortly afterwards, he took a second hit to the same finger during a slip-catching drill.
