Maple Leafs’ Bobby McMann to have hearing for high-sticking penalty

Bobby McMann could be facing further punishment.

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward will have a hearing with NHL Player Safety on Tuesday over a match penalty for high-sticking Tampa Bay Lighting forward Oliver Bjorkstrand on Monday.

McMann chopped down his stick on Bjorkstrand, striking him in the shoulder area during a third-period scrum that broke out following a knee-on-knee hit that left Maple Leafs defenceman Dakota Mermis injured.

Lightning forward Gage Goncalves received a five-minute kneeing major and 10-minute game misconduct on the play, while Maple Leafs forward Dakota Joshua and Lightning defenceman Max Crozier were handed five-minute majors for fighting.

McMann, 29, has eight goals and six assists in 29 games this season.

He has never been suspended in the NHL.

Leafs coach Craig Berube disagreed with the match penalty on Monday, calling it a “tough one.”

“From our view on the bench, I couldn’t really see it too well. I’ll take a look at it, but I had a tough time with that,” he said post-game.

The Maple Leafs, who won the game 2-0, return to action Thursday when they host the San Jose Sharks.
