Prime Minister Andy Burnham steps into FIFA row as Gianni Infantino presses on with World Cup expansion

UK PM Andy Burnham believes that Gianni Infantino isn’t the right man to be in charge of FIFA.

This follows Infantino’s plan to sell stakes in the World Cup off to private investors.

Speaking about Infantino’s plans in Sheffield, Burnham said: “This was an outrageous suggestion.

“The idea that it could even be brought forward shows that, in my view, that the Fifa is the wrong man to lead the organisation.”

It comes after Infantino’s senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro quit following intense backlash to the 57-year-old’s plans.

UEFA announced that all of their nations would boycott all FIFA competitions if Infantino was to push ahead.

But despite all of this going on, the Swiss citizen is pushing on with attempts to expand the men’s World Cup to 64 teams.

The Times’ Martyn Ziegler has revealed that a brief to expand the World Cup has been sent around, with a decision by August 14.

The 2026 World Cup in North America marked the biggest in history.

It was 48 teams, but Infantino has proposed plans to make 2030 even bigger.
