The Cincinnati Reds are in last place in the NL Central and are likely to be selling at the MLB Trade Deadline. One of the hotter commodities from the Reds is catcher Tyler Stephenson.
Stephenson has played his entire MLB career with the Reds, making his debut in 2020. With the talk of him being traded, Stephenson was emotional about his possible departure from the Reds, per C. Trent Rosecrans of MLB.com.
“Pretty surreal,” Stephenson said following the Reds’ 10-2 victory. “It’s been a long couple of weeks.”
Stephenson is set to be a free agent at the end of the season and has been solid in his career with the Reds. He has played 642 career regular-season games with the squad, hitting .260 with a .338 on-base percentage. He also has 71 home runs and 288 RBIs with the team. His first at-bat with the team came when he was called up and appeared in one game on July 27. He came into the game against the Chicago Cubs in the bottom of the seventh inning and promptly hit a solo home run. On Sunday, in the bottom of the eighth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Stephenson went yard again in what could be his final at bat as a member of the Reds.
“I guess to have that first hit be a home run and potentially the last is pretty cool. A lot of emotions. It’s been a fun ride,” Stephenson added.
While the catcher is highly sought after, he does not know what is coming in the next 24-hours.
“My wife and I did talk: (we may) just go around maybe to some different places throughout the city that we enjoy, just in case. I don’t know yet, we’ll see,” Stephenson added. “(I’m) just ready for it to be over with, honestly.”
The MLB trade deadline is on Monday at 6 pm ET.
