Following the Phillies’ 7-1 victory over the Twins on Thursday night in the third edition of the MLB at Field of Dreams Game in Dyersville, Iowa, MLB and Universal Pictures announced on Friday that the Royals and Red Sox will play in another Field of Dreams Game next year. NBC Sports will provide exclusive national coverage of the game, which is scheduled for Aug. 12, 2027.
The MLB at Field of Dreams Game has been a uniquely special event for players and fans alike since the inaugural contest was played between the White Sox and Yankees in 2021. Chicago won that game on a Tim Anderson walk-off homer. In ’22, the Cubs and Reds faced off in Dyersville, with Chicago winning, 4-2.
Inspired by the classic 1989 film, “Field of Dreams,” starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones and Ray Liotta, the game has been complemented with special pregame and in-game festivities over the years. There was a four-year hiatus between 2022 and ’26 for the construction of a new stadium on the famed movie site.
“We are thrilled to showcase our athletes through one of Major League Baseball’s most cherished events and help to grow the game to a worldwide audience,” said Royals president of business operations Cullen Maxey. “Royals territory already covers the Midwest, including Dyersville, so this is a natural fit that provides Royals fans a chance to cheer on the home team in a magical setting.”
The game will be a home date for Kansas City, and following an off-day on Aug. 13, the series with Boston will resume on Saturday, Aug. 14, at Kauffman Stadium. Given Boston’s storied history and place in baseball lore, it will be particularly fitting for the Red Sox as well.
“To have the Red Sox take the field in Iowa, in a place that reminds us why people fall in love with baseball, will be incredibly special,” said Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy. “Part of what has allowed baseball to endure for generations is its ability to evolve while still holding onto the traditions, memories and shared experiences that give the game its meaning.
“We can’t wait to experience that in Dyersville with our players, our fans and baseball fans everywhere.”
