The Detroit Tigers on Friday released left-handed reliever Sean Guenther, according to his MLB.com transaction log, ending his second run with the organization. Guenther had spent most of the 2026 season on the minor league injured list after last pitching in early May. Before the injury, he recorded a 5.40 ERA across 16 2/3 innings with Triple-A and did not make a major league appearance this season.
Originally selected in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Guenther debuted with the Miami Marlins in 2021. During his rookie campaign, he appeared in 14 games, compiling a 9.30 ERA while finishing with an 0-1 record. He allowed 22 runs, including 21 earned, over 20 1/3 innings before undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2022. The Marlins later removed him from its roster, and Detroit claimed him before eventually keeping him in the organization after he cleared waivers.
After returning from injury, Guenther worked his way back through the minors before the Tigers selected his contract in August 2024. He became an important bullpen contributor during Detroit’s push for a Wild Card berth, going 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA over 17 appearances while allowing just two runs in 21 innings. He also appeared in four postseason games, surrendering one run on two hits while earning another win.
His production declined in 2025, when he products a 5.23 ERA in 10 1/3 major league innings and a 5.63 ERA over eight innings in the minors. After being designated for assignment, he re-signed on a minor league deal before injuries again limited his availability in 2026.
Now a free agent, Guenther, who turns 31 in December, is eligible to pursue another opportunity with a new organization in search of pitching depth.
