Tragic news

South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has died, just weeks after playing at the World Cup, according to reports.

The news of the 25-year-old’s tragic death was reported by South African news outlet eNCA on Saturday.

Adams played for South African first tier side Mamelodi Sundowns, and featured three times for his country at the World Cup.

He had only reposted a picture of himself and his girlfriend online less than a day before the news of his passing emerged, with a snap of the couple stood together still visible on his Instagram story.

Adams’ shock death has caused ripples in the football world.

The South African Football Players Union wrote in a statement: “The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams.

“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction.

“His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched.

“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Last season saw Adams play 37 times in all competitions for his club side, scoring twice and providing an assist.

His appearances in the World Cup brought his international caps for South Africa to nine in total.
