New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will continue to deal with the rigors and nuances of the NFL in his sophomore year.
Jaxson Dart was among the bright spots for the New York Giants last season despite their lowly campaign. The Giants missed the playoffs for the third straight year with a 4-13 record. Still, Dart showed that he could be a long-term cornerstone.
He started his rookie season as a backup to Russell Wilson. But it did not take long for Dart to become the main quarterback, getting the keys in Week 4. Since then, he has been impressive in leading the Giants. He threw for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 12 games.
There, however, have been concerns about his high-contact style. He missed two games last season due to concussion protocol. The Giants have urged the 23-year-old Dart to avoid heavy contact to preserve his body.
Well, according to FOX Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano, it looks like the second-year signal-caller has heeded the call in training camp.
“Giants QB Jaxson Dart made the play of the day at camp when he ran towards the sideline for a first down and slid rather than taking a hit,” said Vacchiano on X. “That drew a huge cheer from his teammates.”
In his rookie campaign, Dart underwent four concussion tests, including in the preseason. The NFL has become more cautious about heavy contact, stressing the importance of protecting the players from future complications.
Dart has reportedly struggled in training camp, as coach John Harbaugh has been pushing him hard.
Aside from avoiding unnecessary hits, Dart should also work on his decision-making and tendency to extend plays outside the pocket, which usually leads to erratic possessions.
The learning curve remains high for the former No. 25 pick, and he should only get better with the tough love and sage wisdom of Harbaugh.
