The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a new fielding coach of the Indian men’s cricket team ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. The experienced coach replaces T Dilip, whose tenure came to an end after India’s tour of Zimbabwe, and will begin his new role as part of Gautam Gambhir’s coaching staff during the Sri Lanka assignment.
Experienced campaigner begins a new chapter with Team India
Notably, BCCI have appointed Subhadeep Ghosh as Team India’s new fielding coach. The appointment marks another significant change in India’s support staff as Gautam Gambhir continues to shape his backroom team. Ghosh, a former Assam and Railways cricketer, brings decades of coaching experience to the national setup after working across multiple levels of Indian cricket.
Although his first-class playing career was relatively brief, spanning 17 matches between 1994 and 2004, Ghosh established a strong reputation in coaching circles through consistent work in domestic cricket and player development. He has previously served as the head coach of the Assam senior men’s team and has also been associated with the National Cricket Academy (NCA), where he played a key role in nurturing emerging talent.
His coaching resume extends beyond domestic cricket, having worked with the India A side, the Indian women’s team, and franchises in the Indian Premier League, including Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders. That wide-ranging experience is expected to strengthen India’s fielding standards across formats.
India’s support staff continues to take shape
Ghosh’s appointment comes after a period of restructuring within the Indian coaching setup. Dilip’s contract was not extended after the Zimbabwe tour, while assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate also moved on, prompting fresh additions to the support staff. The new fielding coach now joins batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and bowling coach Morne Morkel as part of Gambhir’s coaching group. Since taking charge, Gambhir has focused on assembling a blend of experienced specialists with strong domestic and international coaching backgrounds.
Fielding has become an increasingly important aspect of modern Test cricket, particularly on overseas tours where every run saved and every catch taken can influence the outcome of a match. Ghosh’s experience in developing young cricketers and working with elite squads is expected to complement India’s preparations for future assignments.

India to begin Sri Lanka Tests on August 15
The 57-year-old will officially begin his tenure during India’s two-match Test series against Sri Lanka later this month. India will first take the field in Galle, where the opening Test starts on August 15. The teams will then travel to Colombo for the second Test, scheduled to begin on August 23 at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC). Before the series gets underway, the Indian squad will fine-tune its preparations with a three-day practice match in Colombo starting on August 7. The fixture will provide Ghosh with his first opportunity to work closely with the players and implement his fielding methods ahead of the challenging Test campaign.
With a refreshed coaching group in place and a demanding overseas series on the horizon, India’s management will hope the latest addition to the support staff helps maintain the high fielding standards that have become a hallmark of the national team in recent years.
