The Chicago Cubs are willing to make moves before the trade deadline, and there are some players available who could help their team. Tarik Skubal’s name has been in rumors for some time now, and it feels like almost every team is trying to find a way to acquire him.
The Cubs should be one of those teams, and if they do pursue him from the Detroit Tigers, they already have two connections that make it worth it for Skubal, according to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic.
“Hoyer has a close, longstanding relationship with his Detroit counterpart, Scott Harris, who earned a 2016 World Series ring while launching his career at Wrigley Field, and now runs the Tigers with a similarly systematic approach,” Mooney wrote.
“Another connection worth noting: Skubal has deep roots in Arizona, which would make spring training at the Cubs’ Mesa complex an appealing and convenient feature once he weighs his options as a free agent. Acquiring Skubal, who is represented by agent Scott Boras, would give the Cubs a head start on that recruiting presentation, though it would likely require a financial commitment to a pitcher that is unprecedented in franchise history.”
With those two connections, it could make life easier for Skubal if he were to get traded to the Cubs. The only thing is whether the Tigers like the deal that the Cubs would be presenting, and it’s uncertain what the offer would look like.
There is a chance that the Cubs would have to gut their farm system, and that’s something they might not be willing to do. It’s understandable, but when you have a player like Skubal who’s available, you’re going to have to give up a lot to get him.
With the deadline just a few days away, it will be interesting to see where Skubal lands in the end.
